State of USA Boxing
(June 25, 2009)

Dear USA Boxing Member:
As your newly appointed member to the BOD of USA Boxing in the capacity of the LBC representative, my responsibility is to you and to keep you fully informed about the state of amateur boxing. I was originally going to write an "I told you so letter" for that dreadful day in Chicago when the USOC and Tom Virgets coerced you into signing all your rights away. However, the situation is too grave to look back, we are now placed in the position of trying to save USA Boxing. I attended my first BOD meeting in March 2009 and within the first 5 minutes I found myself apologizing to the Board for blaming them on not watching your money. I found out a short time latter that they didn't event know that our money was not being spent properly. Naturally this was all blamed on the new governance which you voted on in Chicago, which prohibited interference by the Board with the Executive Director. At least that was the excuse. The USOC saw it differently.

Athletes Needed
(May 22, 2009)

Hello USAB supporters!

The Athlete Advisory Council is trying to increase our athlete e-mail list so we can get more athletes involved in athlete issues, advocacy, and elections. We have changed our by-laws in the attempts to be more inclusive to all USAB athletes, not just the ones that attend US Nationals. Now, ANY registered athlete can vote in AAC National Representative elections.

But we need help spreading the word. Our new website www.usaboxingathlete.org has a place right on the home page that athletes can enter their e-mail address and be added to our list. It would be great if everyone could take 10 minutes or so and get any of the athletes that you know in your LBC to sign up on the home page. OR-you can just enter their e-mail address as well.

Statement by Tim Noonan, Chairman of the California State Athletic Commission
(March 23, 2009)

CONTACT:
Luis Farias – (916) 826-6069
Russ Heimerich – (916) 574-8171

Following is a statement by Tim Noonan, Chairman of the California State Athletic Commission, regarding amateur boxing in California:

"Effective Monday, March 23, 2009 the California State Athletic Commission suspended the authorization previously given to USA Boxing to regulate amateur boxing in California pursuant to Business and Professions Code section 18646. The temporary suspension will remain in effect until CSAC has fully investigated numerous allegations concerning regulation of the sport by USA Boxing and its local affiliates. As previously reported in the press, young children, many under the age of sixteen and some as young as eight, have been fighting in private clubs for entertainment purposes. At these fights, it has been alleged that gambling and drinking took place, and that parents of children were told not to attend."

"The Commission is concerned that the safety and fairness standards set forth and overseen by the national office of USA Boxing are inadequate to properly protect the health and safety of amateur fighters in California."

"USA Boxing maintains a monopoly on fighters wishing to participate in the Olympic Games. Commissioner Noonan has indicated that if USA Boxing’s authority to regulate amateur boxing in California is revoked, the Commission will work closely with the California Legislature to examine whether or not to amend Business and Professions Code section 18702 in order to allow youth participants under 16 years of age to participate in amateur tournaments. The Commission will also work closely with the United States Olympic Committee to ensure that California’s amateur boxers will be able to participate in qualifying tournaments for the Olympic Games."

"The Commission has asked USA Boxing officials to submit written and/or oral argument as to why USA Boxing's authorization to regulate amateur boxing should not be permanently revoked at the Commission's next meeting, currently scheduled for April 13 -14, 2009 in Los Angeles. Commission staff will have no further comment until such time as the Commission makes a final determination as to the status of USA Boxing in California."
